Bloody Transitions
About
We are collecting stories to uplift young girls’ experiences of their first menstruation, also known as menarche. Menstruation is a shared experience among women worldwide, yet it remains deeply stigmatized. From an early age, girls are taught that their menstrual cycle is something to keep quiet about—let alone be proud of.
Let’s break the cycle of shame and celebrate the Bloody Transition from childhood to adolescence.

Bloody Transitions
The idea
Tired of the stigma surrounding periods and unsure what to do about it? Let’s start here. We’re creating a collection of uplifting stories about women’s first periods.
These stories are meant to empower mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and other caregivers to celebrate the young girls in their lives as they experience this important milestone. We want to show that a period can mean many things, but shame is not one of them. Through these collections of stories, we hope to inspire and motivate caregivers around the world to help shift the narrative—so that periods are no longer a source of shame, but something to be respected and celebrated.

The importance of the menarche
A mother’s attitude toward menstruation shapes how a girl experiences her first period and views her body long-term. Research shows that positive perspectives on menstruation reduce sexual risk-taking and embarrassment around reproductive functions like breastfeeding and childbirth.
Menarche has been celebrated throughout history—sometimes with grand religious ceremonies that resemble a wedding party, while in other context they consist of small informal gestures, like receiving flowers. The word menarche is initially a German word that is comprised of the Greek words 'men' meaning month, and 'archÄ“' meaning beginning. The menarche marks a transition in a young women's life. It's a Bloody Transition and it is worth celebrating.
